Day trip from Palermo
Mondello
Palermo's own beach
A bay of white sand and turquoise water at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, about 11 km from the centre. Mondello is where Palermo goes to the sea: in summer for swimming, all year round for a stroll along the seafront and a granita with a view.
What to see
The Antico Stabilimento Balneare
The iconic Art Nouveau bathing pavilion on stilts (1912), the symbol of Mondello, with a restaurant over the water.
The beach
Almost 2 km of fine sand, with free stretches and equipped lidos. The water stays shallow for metres — perfect for children too.
The old fishing hamlet
The old maritime village with colourful boats and little fish restaurants around the small pier.
Monte Pellegrino and the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia
The promontory closing the bay: at the top, the sanctuary of Palermo's patron saint, carved into the rock.
How to get there
Bus 806
From the Politeama area, about 30-40 minutes. AMAT ticket, also available on the app.
Car or scooter
About 20 minutes outside rush hour; in summer, parking near the beach is paid and fills up early.
Taxi
Roughly €25-35 each way from the centre.
How much time to allow
Half a day for the beach and seafront; a full day if you add Monte Pellegrino.
A tip from your hosts
“Go early in the morning or late afternoon: beautiful light and fewer crowds. For a no-frills fish lunch, choose the fishing hamlet over the seafront.”
